Jimmy

I’m a self-confessed foiling addict…… I first started foiling 5 years ago and love to wing foil, kite foil and SUP foil. I now have a range of planing boards, that I can’t bring myself to get rid of, steadily gathering dust as a result.

I have been predominately wing foiling for the last 2 years (since day 1) although, when the conditions are right, I love a SUP foil or kite foil. My original reasons for taking up wing foiling were to access more waves and the foil has never disappointed. In flat water conditions I’m trying hard not to allow my increasing age hold me back in my freestyle attempts!

I have many years of experience in the watersports industry – since 2003 – with managing shops, running a kite school, repairing kites and wings (Jimmys Kite Repairs), writing for magazines and as a BKSA Senior Kitesurf, Wing Foil and Kite Foil Instructor.

Matt

I started kitesurfing 20 years ago in Australia. We only had 2-line kites at the start, so all the depower came from your board edging ability! I ended up doing a diy-conversion on mine to a 4-line using cable ties and old spares.

I have spent time kiting in many places around the world, some of my favourites were Coche in Venezuela and La Morne in Mauritius, and have tried most disciplines of kitesurfing. I taught kitesurfing a few years ago and am a BKSA Senior Instructor for Kitesurf, Kite Foil and Wing Foil.

A few of years ago I got into kite foiling and loved it. I’d already spent time riding waves on a SUP, so it seemed a natural progression to stick a foil on the bottom of that. In spring 2019 I saw the first kite wings being used with foils and had to try it! By June 2020 I had taught a few mates and Jimmy and I decided to set a school to help get more people into foiling sports. There was no national body or curriculum so we used our experience in kite schools to set that up as well as the raft of other documentation required for a school to run safely.

In September 2020 we were both lucky enough to participate in the first Wing Instructor course, run by the British Kite Surf Association, and became the first official group of Wing Instructors in the UK.

Hover Wing Foil Board Size

Below is a rough guide to help determine Hover Wing Foil board size based on rider weight and skill level. A “beginner” rider is considered as someone with no previous board sport experience.

Keep in mind that additional factors, such as wind conditions, foil, and kite wing size will play an important role in the selection of the right board size.

As a rule of thumb, we recommend erring on the side of a more buoyant board with a volume that matches rider weight (for example, an 80kg rider will need at least an 80L board or larger). Riding a “sinker” will work in locations with steady, strong winds, while floatier boards prove to be a safer choice as they allow the rider to get back to shore even if the wind drops under a foilable limit.
